- It's important to understand a character before writing because it will be so much easier to build a story around the character. And when knowing the personality of a character it's easier to write out how the character is reacting to the situation. I could improve the writing of a story by giving more details and being descriptive on what the character is doing. Do they have a look of amusement, boredom, or do they always smile? But I need to know what the character's personality is first and how their attitude is towards people in order to know what to write.
